A new study conducted in Athens, Georgia, by National Geographic and the University of Georgia put cameras on house cats allowed outdoors. Thirty percent of the cats killed wild animals, an average of two kills per week. It’s safer for your cats and for wildlife for your pets to be kept indoors!

It was more than 50 years before I was to see another lynx, not in the Doñana, but in the Sierra Morena mountains to the north, which is now the best place to see these handsome cats in the wild. A Greek Wild Cat , photographed near Lake Kerkini I’ve had a few encounters with wild cats, too, in both France and Greece.

The Atlanta Zoo in Georgia is borrowing Chengdu’s winning technique to help try and have a baby of its own. The rarest big cat on earth, the Amur leopard, is on the brink of disappearing forever. Found in the frozen forests near Russia’s border with Korea, the cats are feared to have just 30 members left in the wild.

For some reason, I chose that day to try to check out the north jetty in the morning, a location rumored to be the only spot in Georgia where one is likely to find wintering Purple Sandpipers. One massively negative aspect of birding Tybee Island is the sheer volume of feral cats and outdoor cats. They are everywhere!

I wish for a federal law prohibiting domestic and feral cats from roaming free outdoors. Violation of the law would be punishable by substantial fines, plus the cat owners would be required to perform community service at a local wildlife rehabilitation facility. Brown Thrashers , those double voiced lurkers with the angry yellow eye, are honored in Georgia, and always a pleasure to find beneath the hedgerows in my neighborhood, but my favorite of the infamous trio has to be the third, the smallest, the sneakiest, and the most subtly charismatic of the three, the Gray Catbirds.
