While not a common garden plant up north, I did find it for sale with Annie’s Annuals, a wonderful California nursery. The moral of the story: If you live in hummingbird country, you really should grow as many nice, tubular salvias as your climate and space allows. But there was no doubt that this male was a Rufous.

Her narrator is Gabriel, 23, raised in Northern California by an American father and a Uruguayan mother. And, given the complicated questions of morality inherent in various parts of her story, she has the perfect (and perfectly ambiguous) ending. Gaines has written a fine story, with humor and sympathetic characters.
