The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. The lower bird is almost certainly littoralis the general upperpart tone lighter olive grey; the more prominent supercilium; whiter median and greater covert tips as opposed to buff; white rather than dirty grey outer tail feathers and restricted flank smudging and streaking all point to this individual being a Scandinavian Rock Pipit.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Fish and Wildlife Service tells states when they may propose a hunting season on cranes, and has ultimate jurisdiction over whether the states get their seasons. There are 400 whooping cranes left in the wild, 100 of them in the eastern population.
