Now, any medication we take and surgical procedures we undergo also have a long line of breeding, enslavement, torture and killing of sentient nonhumans leading up to them, so objecting to "knockout animals" on those grounds is to stand on somewhat thin ice. Why kill and maim and waste taxpayer dollars--or any dollars--on such things?

I think this is why I understand the thinking of people who don't want us to use animals but who promote changing the way we use them to decrease their numbers or their suffering. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. This allows you to watch birds (well, at least those that are not too noise sensitive) while not having to suffer their sounds. Similarly, the Yellow-rumped Flycatcher is the White-browed Flycatcher in Chinese. Not going for the obvious either. Sometimes it works.
