Breeding in Northern Japan and wintering in the Phillippines, some seem to take a migratory rest stop (and slight deviation) at the Shanghai coast. Apparently, there are no Lesser Scaup around here, so even I can be fairly confident to get this species identification right. It seems that this year, at least one Greater Scaup is using Nanhui as a wintering ground. I was hoping to see a Siberian Rubythroat , as it is a beautiful bird and I had not seen one this season yet.

Both the grey morph and white morph of the Eastern Reef Egret were present and also ten Sooty Oystercatchers and our pair of Pied Oystercatchers that breed a few kilometres to the north of Gantheaume Point each year from July. Most of the Red Knot are in very good breeding plumage now and they do stand out very well on the grey rocks.

The falcon breeds in south-eastern Siberia and Northern China but winters in Southern and East Africa. Its success rate when attacking prey was 27% (157 of 581 attacks on prey successful in Honshu, Japan; HBW), and thus slightly higher than the success rate of my jokes in this blog. Great Knot and Red Knot will all intermingle together and the Red Knot are easily overlooked when not in their breeding plumage when every bird appears “grey”! It was only a week later that we discovered our first Terek Sandpiper that had been flagged at Torinumi in Japan.

The engraved blue leg flag read “M1” and there was also a metal band around the right tarsus, but it is no longer necessary to get that information with the presence of engraved leg flags. We have also observed shorebirds marked in Japan, including a Red-necked Stint marked in Japan last year.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.
