Yet, this is also a part of the international cycling route from Germany to the Black Sea. A sudden flight of a forest ghost, the Black Woodpecker goes from one side of the gully to another.

Breeding behaviour and plumage was very apparent, but John Wise , an ex-pat Brit now resident in Orlando, told me that the birds’ activities had been held up for a couple of weeks during a cold snap that saw frosts in Florida. They manage a number of reserves around the UK to protect waterfowl, the most famous being Slimbridge (another iconic place I haven’t made it to yet). The species has taken over Germany so I imagine it is only a matter of time before it is ubiquitous in England too.
