With the proliferation of those erstwhile invaders, House Sparrow , European Starling , and Rock Pigeon , there a lot of homogeneity among these species, which is a shame because what parking lot birds generally lack in beauty they more than make up for in charisma. And in parts of the Rockies, Clark’s Nutcracker reigns supreme.

Small numbers of migrant wood-warblers were around, with Magnolia Warbler , Wilson’s Warbler , and Ovenbird being the highlights, though perhaps Ovenbird breeds there. Seaside Sparrows were incredibly abundant in the saltmarsh west of Gordon Pond. Blue Grosbeaks were common and clearly on breeding territory. It was great!

Sibley Birds East covers “nearly 700” birds, up from 650, and Sibley Birds West covers “over 700,” which I’m assuming is more than the first edition count of 703 birds, if for no other reason than that taxonomic splits have give us Ridgeway’s Rail, Bell’s Sparrow and Sagebrush Sparrow. This means that loons are no longer first!

Lying just a few miles north of the entrance to Madera Canyon, is Florida Canyon. This quite rare warbler, mostly found in Mexico, is at home in the slightly higher elevations, working the grassy edges of the oak trees, acting much more like a sparrow or wren than a traditional warbler. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice.

I’ve been fascinated by flamingos since seeing them in the infield at Hialeah Park Race Track when I was a kid visiting Florida.

The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Breeding colour becomes rather obvious! She also monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot.

The vast majority of Baltimore Orioles that breed in North America return to the tropics between Mexico and northern South America for the cold half of the year. Instead I saw a flash of orange. Not a minute later, I’d scooped up my kid and sprinted back into the house for my binoculars and camera.

Although many South Florida specialties can be seen throughout the year such as White-crowned Pigeon and Snail Kite , most visiting birders decide to come in the months of April and May in search of summer migrants or secretive birds that only vocalize during the breeding season. Migration starts very early in the sunshine state.

But for some poorly (or not-at-all) understood reason, its spread across North America has shown a very northwesterly orientation, so while birders as far away from the epicenter of the North American introduction in Florida as British Columbia get to see Eurasian Collared-Doves regularly we New Yorkers and other northeasterners are deprived.

Breeding behaviour and plumage was very apparent, but John Wise , an ex-pat Brit now resident in Orlando, told me that the birds’ activities had been held up for a couple of weeks during a cold snap that saw frosts in Florida.
