All of these are reasonably common breeding species, yet, while Great Crested Grebes and Mallards do nest at the dam, only Grey Herons are known to nest some 15 miles from here. The biggest surprise are two Whiskered Terns, common lowland breeding birds that require ponds to lay their eggs on floating leaves of waterlilies.

Only the resident shorebirds remain during these winter months, but there are also Brown Boobys diving for fish close to shore at the moment and we rarely see them during the rest of the year. I often cover 45 kilometres in a day whilst I monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding, but I do need to plan carefully around large tides.

The first creek to the north is Willie Creek and we often visit it on the south side when we monitor the breeding pairs of Pied Oystercatchers. We didn’t see the crocodile, but there was a Flatback Turtle in the creek. As we approached the spot where the pair of Beach Stone-curlews were seen in previous years we heard them call.

Five years ago, I observed Dalmatian Pelicans breeding on purpose-built platforms.

The reservoir is surrounded by traditional farming landscape, adding the European Turtle Dove and the Ortolan Bunting to the scene. Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. 2 Baranda fish farm. In some years, Spanish Sparrows were reported breeding inside White Storks nests in Sakule.

Instead of writing at home, I discovered a new “study”, a discreet fish restaurant hidden in the branch of the Danube. Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. One threatened European Turtle Dove takes flight from a roadside hedge.
