My string of winter-only visits to the Adirondacks is over now, happily, because of a three-day weekend with the family in Montreal. In one of the few areas with a decent amount of open water I was surprised to see Canada Geese with young. Shows what I know about when birds breed. Wait, what?

March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I was pleased to add a new woodpecker to my Queens list too. May – Migration’s Peak and Breeding Begins. March and April – Early Migration and Some Good Warblers. Indigo Bunting. Pied-billed Grebe.

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.
