The Botai did not just herd horses for meat. And that fact gives rise to a thought-experiment. Horse-drawn carriages and breeding and racing horses and using them to play polo or to schlep kids around is an insult to horses. Scientists found bit-wear marks on Botai horses’ teeth — a clear sign the animals were being ridden.

For nearly a hundred years, after the eggers, meat-hunters, plume-hunters, and a human-influenced gull population boom, puffins were absent from the island. Though I had seen guillemots a couple of times before I had never seen one in breeding attire and I was smitten. Most of our looks were much better than this. A legless guillemot?

Is it true that the least I can do is support the engineering of animals who experience less unpleasantness than they would have had they not been engineered that way? In other words, the perception of pain is affected. My objection is: Why do such research when you don't need to? That action is to opt out and go vegan.

Of course, as a result, "ethical meat" becomes an option unless one realizes that killing when you don't need to is killing when you don't need to, no matter if it occurs in a slaughterhouse or in a mobile slaughter operation or in a backyard. We all know junk-food vegans and vegans who eat "faux meat" products every day.
