I still look forward to summer birding, but now that I live in upstate New York, I generally turn my attention away from the beaches and saltmarshes of the coast, instead heading north up the Hudson to the Adirondack Mountains. This news story slipped by in November. It has about 140 stores nationwide that sell puppies that supposedly come from "good" breeders (are any breeders good? Some of the breeders were found with sick or dead dogs in their cages. This time it's Petland, who I'm glad to say has no stores in my area (that I know of.)

I am no fan of breeders, I'll admit it. I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. I also know there are people who want to buy from a breeder and no one else. Tags: breeders.

The dog breeding legislation, intended to outlaw “puppy-farming”, was prepared by Green Party leader and Minister for the Environment John Gormley. The draft Bill proposes a new regime of annual inspections and fees for dog breeders. They also want an exemption for hunt kennels which do not breed dogs for commercial purposes.
