The Shelter Pet Project is a wonderful public service campaign from The Humane Society, Maddie’s Fund and the Ad Council! The project goal is to help the many great pets waiting in shelters. The campaign motto is “a person is the best thing to happen to a shelter pet”!

Today is Blog the Change day, a special day where bloggers write about animal causes near and dear to them. Not only do they try to find these pets forever homes, but they provide loving care for those who aren’t adoptable. Most recently they had their special event honoring pets who have passed.

One of the many reasons why we appreciate out pets is because they always keep us laughing. From the adorable sounds our bird makes when she is happy, to watching our dog do “zoomies” around the couch again and again, and many other funny things in between, our pets have always had a way of brightening our days.

If you’re on Aimee’s blog, odds are you’re either already an animal lover or en route to becoming one, so it probably should not come as any surprise that I, myself, am also slightly obsessed with our four legged friends. It was the first time I really wouldn’t see my pups on a regular basis or even be able to adopt one (or a few) of my own.

There are countless dogs and cats in shelters across the U.S. In fact, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 5 to 7 million pets are taken into animal shelters in the U.S.

Every year, roughly 3 million lost dogs and cats end up in shelters in the United States. Lost pets is a growing issue that teens care about. So DoSomething.org asked young people to submit ideas for reuniting pets with their owners. She’s also going to start a blog featuring photos of lost pets from her community!
