My family have already grown bored of my presence this week and are asking when I will be going back to work. An angry Red-winged Blackbird attacked again and again, flashing its bright epaulettes and hitting the heron hard in the middle of its back. The blackbird appeared to be purposefully targeting the heron’s back.

The raising of the bins took place along roads through semi-shaded coffee farms and on the grounds of Villa San Ignacio , a hotel with big old wonderful trees and regenerating forest. Blackbirds. Some members of this family always do well with people and Costa Rica is no exception.

A Green Heron stood stock-still as we passed, blending in with the raised oyster beds recently exposed by the retreating tidal waters. A strong sense of nostalgia washed over me.

Birding Fallon: Well Worth the Trip

Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away. Yellow-headed Blackbird was another lifer for me, and omnipresent. The specials for our dinner at The Slanted Porch in Fallon included dishes prepared from cows and lambs raised by local 4-H Club kids.). A Marsh Wren came out of hiding for us.
