Week 32: Idaho’s Teton Valley, and a visit to Jackson, Wyoming

10,000 Birds

Our little adventure now moves us farther north, into Idaho’s Teton Valley area, and a visit to Jackson, Wyoming. As we get a little farther north, my target list for bird species has diminished a bit, as there are a lot of repeats, and not many new bird opportunities. And here is the same Swainson’s Hawk, in the dark phase.

Learning the Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). She frames her story with first a Doonesbury comic strip (remember Dick Davenport, the bird watcher?)

Little Big Year Week 33: Yellowstone

10,000 Birds

Last week we were in the Teton Valley, getting ready to head over to Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. Critter News

A federal government decision to allow a Wyoming tribe to kill two bald eagles for a religious ceremony is a victory for American Indian sovereignty as well as for long-suppressed religious freedoms, the tribe says. The Northern Arapaho share the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

My Top Ten Birds of 2016

10,000 Birds

Winter birding around New York City was just so-so but I did add one species to my Queens list. The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the road and at rest stops along the way. Aaaarrrgghhhh!

Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

10,000 Birds

And Flamingos and Hornbills and a Secretarybird and birds with names like Hamerkop and Thick-knee and Eremomela (which I know is a scientific term, but which, when pronounced correctly, reminds me of a Yiddish term of endearment my grandmother used). And so, I went on the American Birding Association Safari to South Africa.

Trumpeter Swans: Don’t Shoot Them

10,000 Birds

Only several dozen of these swans wintered in the region (the region being, approximately, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming) and for some reason they were almost all at this river in this year, and on this day, they were right there in view. Overall they are pretty amazing birds. Great Trumpeter Swan birding report HERE.
