Like a film star wearing a whig and big sunglasses in a public place, this bird at first glance looks fairly nondescript. Once the bird takes up a different position, it gets more interesting.

Believe me, after hiking up a mountain in the middle of the night just to catch a glimpse of this bird, I have mixed feelings about whether we even need it in a world with abundant Gray-cheeked Thrush , its more copious counterpart. But, to paraphrase Monty Python, every species is sacred.

These temperatures make for perfect birding/camping weather and because that is one of our favourite pastimes we decided it was time to go and explore a bit more of northern Australia during July. Many of the native plants were flowering, which also aided in the search for pollen eating birds! Cattle can be anywhere!

Google Earth image of Broome to Barred Creek The first bit of excitement on the trip was a rather nice looking Black-headed Python Aspidites melanocephalus. Black-headed Python We then reached Barred Creek just before high tide and parked the car in the shade of the natural bush.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago , it was our time to go and find some new birds! Our actual first bird for Queensland was a Common Myna at the airport and we were surprised that they did not seem as prolific as in Sydney. There’s nothing quite like being woken up by a bird literally laughing at you! Pair of Tawny Frogmouth.

The species is typical of many northern Queensland specialities, being common across New Guinea and just occurring in Queensland (and in the case of the Black Butcherbird, the fringes of the Northern territory as well). I am not sure what kind of snake it was but I think it was a harmless python.
