Yanchep National Park-Perth

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

These temperatures make for perfect birding/camping weather and because that is one of our favourite pastimes we decided it was time to go and explore a bit more of northern Australia during July. Red Kangaroos often stood in the middle of the single lane bitumen across the north of Australia and were in no rush to move on.

Most of the birds in the area were well above ground level! Welcome Swallows , Tree Martins and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soared above and we also had Crested Pigeons , which indicated there must be some water present somewhere nearby. Western Grey Kangaroo. It was quite challenging attempting to photograph birds directly overhead!

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Campbell Park, Canberra.

Lake Eacham, Mt Hypipamee and Mount Molloy

It is these forests, and not the wetlands I have spoken of before , that hold the many endemics that make the Atherton Tableland such a rewarding place to go birding. Mt Hypipamee A beautiful forest part in the southern part of the Tableland, it is perhaps one of the most rewarding places to bird in the area.
