Arriving in the car-park you soon realised the tall trees were very busy with Carnaby’s Cockatoos and looking at the most recent eBird records for Yanchep National Park there are currently over one thousand of them present, so if you are hoping to see one or two it must be the place to go! Lake Indoon

Welcome Swallows , Tree Martins and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soared above and we also had Crested Pigeons , which indicated there must be some water present somewhere nearby. Western Grey Kangaroo. The distance was approximately 4 kilometres/ 2 1/2 miles. Water on the far side of Lake Indoon.

That presumption may be wrong but I don’t think it matters for the present use of the data.) There are 200 animals in each sample, and I presume that this is a random subset of the larger sample of over 400 or so in each category. The following histogram shows the results. Campbell Park, Canberra

As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Also present were other parrots, including the gorgeous King Parrots , the dashing Galah and the Eastern Rosella. Campbell Park, Canberra. A bit into the walk I encountered a large mixed flock of birds.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

Red Kangaroos often stood in the middle of the single lane bitumen across the north of Australia and were in no rush to move on. Red Kangaroos. At Karumba on the Gulf of Carpenteria there are several warnings about the saltwater crocodiles present and the warning is also specifically in German and Japanese! Freshwater crocodile.

And one final treat was a Musky Rat-kangaroo , the smallest member of the macropod (kangaroo and wallaby) suborder, no bigger than a guinea-pig. The flowering trees on the road through town are a good place to find Dusky Honeyeaters, Rainbow Lorikeets and Figbirds , and the stunning Red-winged Parrot is also present in the town.
