After a lifetime of lockdown measures we’re all surely chomping at the bit to get back out and slip back into that birding groove. I shall not get into those, as we may never get to the birds! My first experience was with a nesting pair, one bird was out at the time and the other was comfortably sitting quite low in the nest.

One good thing about birding during a pandemic–the forced restrictions on place and time translate into more time to observe what birds do. Bird behavior–endlessly fascinating, but so much still hidden and unknown. Extreme behaviors also push scientists to look at birds in new ways.

“Gamebirds” to some, cool, cryptic understory birds to the birding people, grouse crouch protected as unfettered winds sway the top of the tall prairie grass. Then there are the ones that live in PA , the state bird, “the grouse” that a great many non-birders are aware of, my Uncle Fred was one of them.

The water this Northern Pintail is in has human poo in it, which completely ruins the experience of seeing this bird. The majority of diehard birders do not care where they get their birds. There is a caste of birders, however, that do not subscribe to this way of birding…no. Oh wait, it doesn’t.

Do you know what the luckiest little bird in the world is? Food for a fledgling thrush is abundant in June with everything from ripe cherries on the trees to loads of snails crawling through the leaf litter. A diet of perfectly ripe cherries and escargot sounds great for humans and for a baby bird it is practically paradisaical.

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. If there is one order of birds that is guaranteed to draw involuntary gasps and odd keening noises, it is the Strigiformes.
