Wild bird rehabilitators want bird parents to feed their own babies. Putting a baby bird back in its nest is not always the right thing to do.

The trails may have been buzzing with joggers, dog-walkers, and bikers, but the water was empty. We did have to dodge joggers and dog-walkers as we lugged our boats up and over the land bridge, but they politely gave us our space and soon we had hit the water once more. Paddling and birding that morning was a gift.

Because “duck, duck, goose” is a little too wintry (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) for a post written in the dog days of August. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct. In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years.

She previously wrote on 10,000 Birds about birding in the Washington DC cherry blossoms. Normally when someone says “wedding,” they don’t also think “birds.” was about all the southern birds I could cross off my list! Adding a bird to the life-list and I had only been in Florida for thirty minutes! Great Egret.

The day before, the day I arrived, was a transport day, and that meant the pack hadn’t been seen in the afternoon. And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. Her concern was well founded.

Well, this time next week I’ll be winging my way to Cape Town via Auckland and Singapore (air transport is weird sometimes), so this is my last beat post of the year. The African Wild Dog. New Caldonia’s odd flightless heronish bird. I imagine this will be the one that comes off next after the African Wild Dog.
