Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. Bonus photos: One to annoy those people who do not like human items in bird photos … … and one showing an embarrassing moment for an eagle, crashing into the ice.

I’ve been to the Sounds before, but I had never visited them specifically to bird, which means I hadn’t seen the specialities there. New Zealand Fur-seals are the most common pinniped found in New Zealand. They are breeding and expanding on the island and I can go back one day and know I have a chance of seeing them then.

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. They are a common enough coastal bird that can been seen from shore on some days paddling around the marina, but a nice bird none-the-less.

If there is one thing that Kiwis care about, it’s birds. No, wait, not birds. One thing visitors love to see in New Zealand is Kiwi, the national (sort of) bird, and they also enjoy seeing some of the other birds the place has to offer. Kiwis care about rugby. A good place to see the enigmatic Kokako.

Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. John Bachmann headed west to gather material for Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.
