Daisy had heard of an organization called YANA (You Are Not Alone), that was distributing relief supplies to those who had suffered from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and that needed warm clothes and other supplies for children, so she prepared a box of clothes that Desi had outgrown, along with wipes and diapers. People are too.

Common Chaffinches and Great T**s are calling from several directions at once, but even such extrovert birds are surprisingly hard to spot among young leaves. Due to mass wolf poisonings in the 1960s and the 1970s, Griffon Vultures in Serbia suffered a dramatic population crash. And the cliff was white with bird droppings.

To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. I got sunburned, Desi suffered a nasty cut over his eye, and all three of us sneezed and sniffled and hacked and coughed with colds. Absolutely! Would we do it again? In a heartbeat!

Birders wanted the boat to go out but were concerned that the weather could postpone the trip or, perhaps worse, almost postpone the trip, which would mean a long day suffering in rough seas. The top image is of the second bird, likely a first-year bird, while the one below is the one Eric spotted, likely a second-year bird.

I dipped a bird recently – possibly a lifer. First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time. I opt for the bird richest section of the lake, visible from the eastern dyke. What to say?

Back on Friday, 12 February, I was dismayed when I read the weekly New York City Rare Bird Alert email. Why would a bird like that being reported in Queens dismay me? I heard Red-winged Blackbirds conk-a-ree-ing from phragmites. After all, birding under a highway is not exactly my idea of a pleasant experience.
