However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). My hotel was right on the A6 motorway and despite the strange location it is undoubtedly the best hotel for the Oostvaardersplassen.

What I have always missed there and what I still miss is to experience presence of the European Beaver. The last beaver in the area was killed ten miles to the east – near Pancevo around the year 1900, but, reintroduced some dozen years ago, there are some 150 of them in the country nowadays. Nevertheless, Nagy was right.

The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. The spot to view the sparrows and pipit is right on a beaver dam surrounded by mud, it’s pretty cool.

After all, exposing a child to nature is important in their development, right? I saw a beaver though! The beaver was way over on the other side of the valley we were looking down at. Other than the beaver there wasn’t much to see. Desi was game and that convinced Daisy. It was a long two-plus hours. That was nice.

This trip was actually all about photographing the grizzly bears the inhabit the Katmai National Forest, I will not bore you with the flight details, from La Paz, Mexico to Alaska, but it included several planes, one of which was a De Havilland Beaver float plane. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Hundreds of Black-necked Stilts were around the refuge, this group passed right by me on a short morning walk. Now that is a first.
