The Danube Backwaters

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. What I have always missed there and what I still miss is to experience presence of the European Beaver. Nevertheless, Nagy was right.

Jumping out of my “Beat” today

This trip was actually all about photographing the grizzly bears the inhabit the Katmai National Forest, I will not bore you with the flight details, from La Paz, Mexico to Alaska, but it included several planes, one of which was a De Havilland Beaver float plane. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. Common Redpoll.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. Part of this loop goes right by the old barn.

After all, exposing a child to nature is important in their development, right? I saw a beaver though! The beaver was way over on the other side of the valley we were looking down at. Other than the beaver there wasn’t much to see. Desi was game and that convinced Daisy. It was a long two-plus hours. That was nice.
