I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last.

Black Bear. Enter Black Bear Crestfallen, I schlepped my sorry self from my minuscule apartment, across the Village Green toward the coffee shop. A group of law school students walked far out of their way to avoid the sight. If I could have shot the poor bear on the spot, I would have.

Even drone retailers and manufacturers are getting in on the game. Over time, it’s these physiological changes that can disrupt animals’ breeding or rearing habits.

Of course, there were plenty of big game around, and so I will post a few of those shots at the end of this posting. We had stopped at one of the massive over-looks near Roosevelt Lodge, when a small group of Pine Siskins flew all the way across the canyon, and landed in the tree above me. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves.

Barbets are a group of medium sized, chunky, generally colorful, frugivorous, hole-nesting near-passerines, that are popular targets for anyone birding in the tropics. The four Gymnobucco species are Africa’s least observed group of barbets as they are restricted to the less visited tropics of central and west Africa.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. This was not a very successful prank, especially since we had just encountered a large cinnamon-colored black bear which was much more interesting, even to a birder.
