Death of the Downy Woodpecker, or, Dunlin at 10,000 Feet: The Eighth Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit

10,000 Birds

This past Saturday, 09 October 2021, was the Eighth Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit. As regular readers of 10,000 Birds know, the Big Sit is my favorite birding event of the year, narrowly edging out the Christmas Bird Count. It’s lonely in the dark with no birds to keep you company.

Come@me:Cameras with AA batteries are the best

10,000 Birds

A long time ago, before many of you may have been birding, I got my very first camera. Despite the disadvantage of not being able to take many photos or having to wait for the photos to be developed you did not need to worry about batteries, because they were all manually operated. My current AA battery camera.

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

10,000 Birds

The machine-gun drumming of a Chestnut Woodpecker greeted us once we alighted from the vehicle. No visual on the woodpecker, sadly – several Scaled Pigeons bolted from the treetops as we searched, though. Yes, meals are a high priority for us when we’re going birding!

Isolation, a.k.a. Business as Usual

10,000 Birds

Going birding is even more of a no-brainer now than before. Many moons ago, when I used to work in the (supposedly) booming petrochemical industry in Trinidad, most of my time was actually spent birding. I racked up a staggering number of life birds in the surprisingly rich surroundings during my four-odd years slaving for The Man.

Come@Me Week Round Up

10,000 Birds

Another amazing 10,000 Birds theme week is in the tank. Joining Poop Week , Wood-Warbler Week , Bird Love Week , and other theme weeks lost in the ether, Come@Me Week was an unbridled success, causing arguments, hurt feelings, bar fights, and at least one felony during its week-long run. 1PM – Mike: Lookalike Birds Should Be Lumped.
