I cannot get the Hoary Bat out of my head. I never knew, until my ill-fated encounter , that these are among the most birdie of the North American flying mammals. Hoary Bats roost in trees, not caves. So the Hoary Bat is migratory. Shoot, it’s not working!

I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Yet, those bird guides are hefty.

Maggie Ciarcia, a solo wildlife rehabilitator in Carmel, NY specializing in small mammals and game birds, received a notice from New York State Electric and Gas that tree trimming was scheduled for her neighborhood and someone would contact her. But back to power companies. No wildlife rescue required. Ah, Europe! Fish & Wildlife Service.

Recently, 29 fish species of fish were recorded in this area, together with 8 amphibians, 9 reptiles and 62 species of mammals (including 20 species of bats), together with Wild Boar , Roe Deer , Wildcat , Golden Jackal , Eurasian Otter , European Pine and Beech Martens , Steppe Polecat , Stoat and the Least Weasel.

We did see one other species of mammal, a bat, and they were more cooperative, though I don’t think anyone in the boat felt confident enough to identify the bats to species (if anyone out there wants to tell me what they are I’d appreciate it).
