It was the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, calling to report a Bald Eagle standing “crumpled” in remote area near Wausau, Wisconsin. A waste truck driver had found the eagle, but was unable to stay with her until we could arrive. This eagle is not long for this world.”. We are off to rescue a Bald Eagle, kiddo!”

And so, the foxes and shrikes endemic to the island began to suffer as the greenery went. And so, these goats ate the flora of the island: unique species of Indian paintbrush and woodland star, bushmallow and wirelettuce and morning glory. The Indian paintbrush and the morning glory are doing much better. The wren remains gone, forever.

Terrestrial animals could drown; will not be able to access the necessary ranges; be trapped; suffer diminished genetic diversity; and possibly become extirpated and/or extinct. Public lands at risk. On my latest trip home my mom and I spent a bit of time talking about Bald Eagles. Mom, who grew up in Cold Spring, was impressed as always by the tally – when she moved away in 1972 eagles were unheard-of. Now, according to my father and brother, they’re rare and show up only in transit when they show up at all.

Though all birds will be somehow impacted by climate change, I think it is important to note that not all will suffer. High elevation species will surely suffer from shifting and reduced habitat, and that process seems to have started already. Will early-arriving birds suffer from having to endure late winter storms?
