It seems his family of 5, had rented a condo that sleeps 8, at Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. Before we had even made it down the long drive way, we had several species, including the Bahama Mockingbird , a Palm Warbler , a Gray Kingbird, and a Smooth-billed Ani. Bahama species – 38.

Uncommon Yellowthroats

The Bahama Yellowthroat lives, well, on a collection of Bahaman islands. I live right in the middle of this species’ range, and have seen it ten times so far. The first can be found from Mexico to Panama, while the second is endemic over a fairly large part of eastern Mexico. See the difference? Neither do I!

When we returned to Tucson, from the Bahamas, I was approaching a milestone number, 1300 bird species, and drove myself hard, climbing, hiking, searching, and driving all over the state of Arizona looking for those last eight birds. The Razorbill Invasion of Florida

The first sighting was of an individual seen and photographed right off the pier at Boynton Inlet on December 9, 2012. As the storm was pulled northward across Cuba and the Bahamas, it began to temporarily weaken, lose convection, and suffer from dry air intrusion before it began interacting with an incoming trough.

Red-breasted Nuthatch at Forest Park

10,000 Birds

Austria, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and a brief visit to California have kept me in new birds and it has been wonderful. The nuthatch also foraged in a more traditional way, walking right-side-up and up-side-down on tree trunks and branches. This year has been a good year for me in terms of travel.

We have escaped the clutches of the Bahamas, and are finally back “home” in Tucson, Texas. All in all, twenty six airplane flights this year, traveled around the world, to 11 countries, and not one single delay, or interruption of service, until the Bahamas. Bahamas Species – 58. The Little Big Year species – 1291.
