The Little Big Year-week 46: All this fun comes to an end

When we returned to Tucson, from the Bahamas, I was approaching a milestone number, 1300 bird species, and drove myself hard, climbing, hiking, searching, and driving all over the state of Arizona looking for those last eight birds. With four days to go in 2018, why not try for a few more, right? Bahamas Totals: 58.

After all, exposing a child to nature is important in their development, right? Little Grebes and Least Grebes more than made up for not getting the Clark’s Grebe and Wallcreeper , Puerto Rican Tody , and Bahama Woodstar seem like a fair trade for Ross’s Gull. Why did we stop for lunch!?!?!)

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

While visiting the Kakadu National Park, I was able to photograph this Rainbow Bee eater right after it had caught a dragonfly. In Caines, Australia, we enjoyed a wet morning on the Daintree River, with Murray Hunt, of the Dain Tree River Tours.

Tiritiri Matangi Island

On my first visit to the island a few years ago I even found one hunting for sandhoppers and other assorted treats in the washed up seaweed on the beach. Wicked, right? I usuaully see Saddlebacks when I go to Kapiti, and often when I go to Karori, but they are everywhere on Tiritiri. Hat-tip to Stella.
