Following Duncan’s post about the Fabulous Fairy-wrens , you may be forgiven for wondering how many exceptional adjectives can be used in naming one genus of birds. ” Bird of Paradise (which incidentally also holds the title for the most syllables in a common name (and is also the only one to contain extraneous punctuation!)).

This is our thirteenth year of observing Pied Oystercatchers breed along the coast near Broome and it gets easier every year! They always nest from the end of June and they always nest in the same place or within a few metres if there is disturbance around the breeding territory. They are so predictable!

There is a lot of bird movement around Australia at the moment due to the weather, so time to go and investigate! Last weekend we drove just out of town to where the road has been flooded and observed thousands of birds that have taken advantage of the very wet “Wet&# that we have experienced and bred like crazy.

Over the past week in Australia there has been a lot of talk in the media about coral bleaching and most of the conversation has been about the Great Barrier Reef off the eastern coast of Australia. There were still birds feeding on the reef as the tide pushed in fast and these were mostly migratory shorebirds and also Reef Egrets.

As a result of the cold weather we decided to do some birding from the car for a change with the air-conditioning off. These shorebirds are mainly found in arid areas of Australia and the population is believed to be approximately 60,000. As a result of this there is a lot of head movement as they investigate all around them.

The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. They are also inquisitive, so if you observe some near the edge of the road and you want to gain their attention you can turn on your car indicators and they will often investigate rather than run off.

The species ranges widely across the Pacific, as its scientific name suggests, from the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexico to the Japanese Bonin Islands to New South Wales in Australia. But it also occurs in the Indian Ocean, from Aldabra near Madagascar to Western Australia. Intermediate birds can also occur, like this one.
