Roebuck Plains in flood

This is the only highway around Australia in this part of the country and we don’t need it falling to bits! Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased Barn Owl. We always travel through the shallowest section to prevent damage to the highway. Water across the highway.

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. My British total was a mere 172 species – not bad, but not very good. Every one of my 171 species was a bird that I found myself.

Scheyville National Park

I pulled over, as this was only the third time I have seen this species, and found a few Australian White Ibis among them, along with Purple Swamphens. The only other time I have seen this species before was in Victoria, at the same site that I first saw Straw-necked Ibis at as it happens. Not a bad way to end a bird-filled day!

Where the Kingfishers Are

The third species I saw was an Atherton endemic (of which there are a few knocking about) Macleay’s Honeyeater , a striking spotted honeyeater that was easy to watch on the bird baths near the dining area. We soon located two nests of Eastern Barn Owls , but were unable to find the Sooty Owls that make the site a drawn for many birders.
