I am not sure if this is totally true in the widest sense, especially when it comes to the question of WHY birds migrate (I’m asked this question constantly by beginning birders and would love an answer that doesn’t involve a garble of words about magnetic fields, genetics, and scarcity of resources).

I have great admiration for Ballentine and Hyman’s ability to clearly articulate and summarize the many research articles they must have read in preparation for this book. I wish there was more discussion of research techniques and resources. The articles clearly relate to some of the studies described in the text, but not all.

It has absolutely nothing to do with any genuine environmentalist ethic. Like I said, the entire animal rights "ethic" is both cynical and dishonest. Why do you suppose that is?
