Several, like the mocker and the hummer, were members of families I hadn’t encountered before, either. Though trips to Borneo, Argentina and Sri Lanka gave plenty of new ticks, I most enjoyed birding in Africa. I can still recall the thrill of that first morning outside San Francisco, surrounded by new birds. Fantastic!

Golden-crowned Warbler

This tree is of the coniferous family and this bird has made its life around the southern temperate forest where this tree has been constantly destroyed to clear for farmland development. On the way back to the car we could hear a group of parakeets that circled the forest and landed near the park entrance. Planalto Woodcreeper.

Nightingale-Thrushes

We all have them: families of birds that are maddeningly similar, forever leaving nagging doubts about our identifications. My region, thankfully, only seems to host migratory Hermit Thrushes from this group. Having said all of this, I must say that the Nightingale-Thrushes are a charming little group.

Suddenly a group of barn swallows hatched in a barn or underpass in North America decides to stay in the wintering grounds and start a breeding colony there.
