The use of tool by animals is surprisingly rare. Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. All the wild ferrets by 1974, and all the kits born to the nine captives, and finally the last of the captive animals in 1979. But the ferrets kept dying. Second chances like this are the stuff of legend.

The Hamar women are immediately identifiable by their brick red hair braids, beautiful beaded jewelry and animal skin clothes designed to imitate gazelles. Other quality birds seen in the park that morning included the endemic Wattled Ibis, Banded Snake Eagle , migrant Pallid Harriers, Nubian Woodpecker and Brown Babbler.

A range of animals come to satisfy their need for salt or the soothing effects of the clay along the river banks of the region. UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank.

Then of course, we have amazing birds such as Wallcreeper , Hoopoe , and Black Woodpecker. For sure we have great birds like Great Crested Grebe , Great Bustard , and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Their ecology in Germany is being investigated, but the results have so far been inconclusive.

My Dad is less of a biologist and more interested in history, but is also laid back and happy enough watching us have fun, but we even managed to find some historical sites to investigate. We went with a local company, Borneo Eco Tours. Another endemic, the Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrush. Tabunan Rafflesia Centre.
