Choosing the right pet for your child is key. Children can learn so many valuable lessons by caring for a pet. Having pets at a young age instills kids with a sense of confidence that they can take care of an animal and help it to live a thriving life. More importantly I find pets can be great therapy for kids.

Chris from Beijing wasn't able to comment (Animal Person is blocked in China) but he did write me to say he looks forward to Jonathan Safran Foer's sequel to Eating Animals. Not Eating Animals. And when you have people who slaughter animals for a living on your side, in my mind your pro-animal message loses credibility.

As someone who's about to have a one-year old in her life, I was particularly aware of the part animals play in the lives of the children and how animals are talked about. Also, the have families (as if other animals don't). All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen).

They may have no idea what they’re doing, but their compassion overrides their doubt. Somehow they manage to get the bird or animal to a rehabilitator, even though finding one is often a feat in itself. A pet cat raising orphaned ducklings! And sometimes they even give us money, which elevates them to sainthood.
