Lakshmi rides an owl as her Vahana (a spirititual being or animal that transports a God) and the Spotted Owlet has been chosen to represent the family. Common throughout India with a range that covers much of South-east Asia, it can often be seen around habitation where it catches small rodents, insects and invertebrates.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. The Calgary Zoo is again under scrutiny as details emerged Friday about how a capybara, a species of giant South American rodent, died after becoming caught in a hydraulic door last weekend as it was being moved from one area to another.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago. These islands and their surrounding waters are protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service , there are about 10 billion breeding birds in the US. The maximum population size may be closer to 20 billion in the fall, and 10 billion at the start of the Spring breeding season. Notably, this is a vey small number compared to the number of rodents killed by the same cats.

We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast. The main threat was the reduction in vegetation for native animals and the general degradation of the land.
