The first bird to draw my eye was a fine adult Grey Plover, or what is known in America as a Black-bellied Plover, sitting characteristically hunch-backed just a few yards from my car, on the edge of the tide. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. These were dark-bellied birds from Russia.

Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709 – 1746) was a German-born naturalist, though it seems he spent most of his (shortish) adult life in Russia, participating in the exploration of the North Pacific region. The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido.

Alaska Day commemorates Alaska’s formal transfer from Russia to the United States in 1867. Yukon Flats NWR is one of the most productive waterfowl breeding areas in North America. Many of these breeding birds disperse throughout North America, utilizing all four major flyways. October 18 is a legal holiday in the 49th state.
