There are also 14 species of New World Barbets and 2 species of Toucan-Barbets (all in South America). Unfortunately, I have so far seen only a few of them, and none of the ones in the Americas … but here are ten that I have seen and got halfway decent photos of.

Very few birds – or animals for that matter – would plunge head-first into the churning cauldrons of some of South America’s most treacherous rivers. Red-ruffed Fruitcrows are a highly sought-after species and are tough to find elsewhere in South America.

They both perch hunt and hover hunt and will even hop along the ground in pursuit of prey. Whatever they are doing – hunting, chasing other birds, or just flying around – Eastern Kingbirds are fun to watch. Eastern Kingbirds breed across the eastern United States and much of southern Canada.

Buff-breasted Sandpipers are hardy little birds, migrating yearly between their grassland wintering grounds in South America and their tundra breeding grounds in the high Arctic. The only thing that could have made the experience with Tryngites subruficollis better would have been some sunlight. What great little birds!

If this was America, we might not be concerned because starlings are an invasive species, at least in North America. But in Iraq, and more exactly, Kurdistan and Iraqi Kurdistan, they are supposed to be there (and are regularly hunted and eaten) and the fighting is not supposed to be there.
