Africa has a superabundance of antelopes, and one of the cutest and most unusual is the Klipspringer. My only sighting until this year had been a distant speck on a far off koppie in Kenya, but this pair (they live in pairs) came very close to my safari vehicle in Madikwe in South Africa. The males have horns.

I found out on my second day in Mkuze, a great game reserve in South Africa, earlier this year when on my first dark night, poor visibility, uneven ground and unsteady footing resulted in a twisted ankle and a day in camp keeping weight off it. Even a Leopard Tortoise dropped by! Blue Waxbill.

Hence, for the rest of the world, I lowered my threshold to 400 and that worked well in Africa, but I soon discovered that for Asia I need to go further down, to 300. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger , Leopard. Next time, see you in Africa. Other than that, there are barely a few hotspots with over 500 species.

And so South Africa’s fifth largest park came to be (it’s worth remembering that its largest park, Kruger, is the size of Israel) on marginal land that no one in particular could do much with.
