Major extinction events that are geologically instantaneous have been followed by periods of time with reduction of species or unstable habitats that last for hundreds of thousands or millions of years. There are about 10,000 species of them, after all, which is a lot for a vertebrate. But, that is also a naive view.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

They were still listed as Endangered, but wildlife management measures taken in this park were clearly working. Below legal size for humans is still legal for pelicans. I do have experience with this species from Bodrum, Turkey; it is daring, bold and cocky, and is impossible to forget.
