2018 proved to be one of my best birding years ever. In addition to spotting exciting new species in Florida, including the rare Snail Kite, travel across the country brought me into contact with birds in Oregon, California, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama, and more. Not so much. And the third trimester?

Major extinction events that are geologically instantaneous have been followed by periods of time with reduction of species or unstable habitats that last for hundreds of thousands or millions of years. There are about 10,000 species of them, after all, which is a lot for a vertebrate. But, that is also a naive view.

Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway.

This Loggerhead Shrike ( Lanius ludovicianus ) was a life bird for me at the Salton Sea in California in 2018. But history doesn’t seem to have recorded which species of bird first dared to land on an electrical wire. Have been driven sideways at intervals handy for human legs. As Daniel L. Yet they are ours.

More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed downlisting it from “endangered” to “threatened.”. Due to substantial improvements in its population and its prospects, the U.S.

They were still listed as Endangered, but wildlife management measures taken in this park were clearly working. Below legal size for humans is still legal for pelicans. I do have experience with this species from Bodrum, Turkey; it is daring, bold and cocky, and is impossible to forget.

There are 258 species documented; half of which nest in the park. This is the bird formerly known as Gray Jay (from 1957 to 2018).
