The Cherokee National Forest just got bigger!

Through multi-partnerships, cooperation, federal funding, and the private conservation efforts of one family, 616 acres were officially added to the Cherokee National Forest in September 2018. Bald Eagle. It’s still possible (amidst the scurry to take from public lands) to protect our pristine wilderness areas. Magnolia Warbler.

Urban birds, urban birding… is there a future?

White-tailed Eagles normally take flight silently, yet, while checking some Common Starlings and hoping for Rosy Starlings , I heard a few noisy wing-beats, enough to turn and see a young eagle flying with a wing tag. To prove more how young and inexperienced it was, the eagle even landed on the ground a mere 15 metres behind my car.

Reflecting on a Year of Less Birding

2018 proved to be one of my best birding years ever. Daily birding in my own hometown added to the joy of seeing common species in uncommon circumstances, like a Bald Eagle perched on a Destin sand dune. I am determined to instill the same love for the natural landscape in my friends and family, especially any new, tiny members.

Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. The crest of the Long-Crested Eagle looks a bit exaggerated to me – like some retro-punk wearing a mohawk decades after 1977. I was vaguely curious about the family name mousebird.
