They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock.

The next rare bird that I was able to chase came a couple of years later in January 2016. I make this statement with this addendum; I would not post the location of a species that could be targeted during hunting season. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes. These twitches were all lifers for me.

The Kite Run

Swallow-tailed Kite is an enigmatic species in North Carolina. And 2016 is kite year, evidently. In the hopes of salvaging something new for the state from the warm part of the year in 2016, I headed out the next morning. Mexico, probably. In any case, August is kite month, if you’re lucky enough to cross paths with them.
