Birding Tabin, Sabah, Borneo

10,000 Birds

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). Market prices have tracked demand: in 1987 birds retailed for $ 14, rising to $ 44 in 2014 and $ 99 in 2016.” It deserves a lot better than being caught and locked in a cage.

Buff-sided Robin

10,000 Birds

Having added the new additions to my 2016 year list I noted we had not yet seen a member of the Fantail or Robin family as yet. Our first encounter of a Northern Fantail for 2016! Birding India with the ABA

10,000 Birds

India was not on my list of places to go in 2016. My group, led by Rockjumper guide David Erterius, started off with a great view of this Brown Fish-Owl , perched on a low wall in a thicket of vines near the entrance to our route. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge.

What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. When you look at Clements latest taxonomic spreadsheet, you get a sense of the depth of their relationships to each other and the world. Jennifer Ackerman is one of my favorite bird authors.
