Best Bird of the Weekend (First of April 2012)

10,000 Birds

My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment. Today happens to be mine, so send some cheer my way!

Twitching

10,000 Birds

This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. I make this statement with this addendum; I would not post the location of a species that could be targeted during hunting season. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes.

10,000 Birds

I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. Get my Florida list to 180 species. Who knows what great birds 2015 will bring?

The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

10,000 Birds

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well. Which would be weird. 78(1):61–78.

Prairie Falcon Attack on a Northern Shoveler

10,000 Birds

On 11 November 2012 I was leaving Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake after a fruitless morning of trying to photograph birds in a snowstorm and poor light when a female Prairie Falcon ambushed this Northern Shoveler on the water not far from the causeway on which I was driving.
