When to bird: The best period birdwise is from November to February, because the Danube in Serbia seldom freezes; although it did so recently, in February 2012, when the 1000 m / 3300 ft wide river was frozen solid from bank to bank, causing a large mortality among waterbirds. Up to the mid-20th century, Pygmy Cormorants were a common breeding species of wetlands around Belgrade… until the wetlands were drained and the birds were lost, at one moment – from the whole of Serbia. Their mortality was huge, but I realised how huge only when we did the December 2012 census to find only 1300 PCs.

Since then, we have seen a marvellous recovery, with an estimate of 123 in 2012, 145 in 2013, 165 in 2014, 197 in 2015 and now in 2016, around 232 Great Bustards roam the wilds of Germany, nearly doubling their number within just a handful of years! Do NOT walk around the empty buildings trying to see/flush them!

Of the native breeding species, 112 are endemic or “very nearly endemic.” (Can of Texas Press in 2013 (I haven’t examined either title).

I feel certain that, given Tennessee’s 18-year track record of celebrating cranes in a tremendously successful festival, the opposition will only be stronger in 2013.
