In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

The extra nice thing about his choice is that he saw it because of a 10,000 Birds post: In my planning to visit my daughter in Sleepy Hollow NY I checked out birding in the area and came across Corey’s excellent blog from June 2, 2011 about birding Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle!

I often like to poke fun at how dangerous the wildlife of Australia is, as ever since the giant man-eating Haast’s Eagle went extinct the land life on New Zealand has been mostly harmless. Several months separated Christchurch’s first big quake from the catastrophic one in 2011. Only time will tell.

A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. You can tell when the Eagle is aloft because the Loons alarm call. Every now and then you see an Eagle and a Loon interact a bit. So, no Eagles maybe.
