Splits were once a much more subjective determination, based on differences in appearance, vocalizations, habits, and breeding preferences. Our Transvolcanic Jay was only split from the Mexican Jay in 2011; there is pressure to split the latter species into as many as three species more.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water.
