I came across this British article from 2008. The steeply declining number of whales in the world's oceans is causing the remaining creatures to suffer loneliness and 'lose the will the live', a leading expert has claimed. From the Daily Mail.

FL Animal Control Conducts Bizarre Experiment

Clay County violated five federal animal welfare regulations in a in September 2008 experiment that involved putting a dog in a non-air-conditioned truck for an hour at midday, according to a U.S. The temperature did not exceed 86 degrees, the dog was closely monitored and suffered no ill affects, they said.

Not for nothing did 10,000 Birds readers elect the chickadee as the Most Beloved Backyard Bird of 2008 ; if we had run elections in other years, chickadees would no doubt have been front-runners. The chickadee that I discovered on the sidewalk was suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.
