Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

I’m not a fan of some of the cuts to science, but National came in in 2008. Unsustainable hunting leads to extinction. Sustainable hunting doesn’t.

They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. Houston Audubon instituted a ‘no hunting’ policy and by July 1995, there were 50 heron nests on the island, protected from mammalian predators by the large alligators in the waterways. Surprisingly, the Avocet area was not fenced off.

Earlier, a large number of villagers were being killed by tigers: 11 in 2006, 13 in 2007 and more than 26 during 2008. It is a success, despite the heavy burden of poaching and a human-tiger conflict.
