A surprise Orange Chat

The last record of an Orange Chat in the Broome area was in 2006. We have encountered Orange Chats before in Western Australia, but also in the Northern Territory at the Tennant Creek Poo Ponds. Some years we encounter Crimson Chats around Broome too and even less rare is the Orange Chat.

Black Swans in Melbourne

It did not take too long to discover that the project has been running since 2006 and has enabled the research team to find out a lot about the Black Swans in the Melbourne area. Black Swan L07 was originally banded 21st June 2006 at Albert Park and is over 9 years old. She was also given her neck band in 2006, but on 12th October.

Birds that wake you up….

Various governments have forced us to trial it in Western Australia in 1975, 1984, 1992 and 2006 and we have then had to vote on it and it has been rejected. They inhabit the north of Australia and look like an over-sized kingfisher. Birding Australia Broome Kookaburras' Blue-winged Kookaburra on our fence.

Pied Heron near Broome

Another good place to locate the Pied Heron in Western Australia is the Kununurra Poo Ponds. Our only records of Pied Herons in the Broome area since we moved here permanently in 1999 are on 24th June 2006, 22nd February 2011, 6th July 2013 and this week on 6th September 2017.
